As a production designer I seek the particular. Finding a framework with character. By observation, documentation and imagination. I intend to bring out the essential characteristic of a set. The sets enter the film as a background, while actors occupy the foreground. A set must play its part. As a designer I play with height, depth, large or small, matte surfaces, mirrors, range of dull colors and so on. Production design for me is creating a poetic value. Color is used to visually layer the stories. Finding the right colors, shapes, negative shapes to be comfortable, worn, deep and suggestive. Deliver a balanced design that works as a stimulus and not as a blockade for the actors. Creating the imaginary world that the director feels comfortable in. I am a painter with objects inside or outside walls. I enjoy making the backstage team forget that the set is just a temporary state of being.
In the field of artistic film, I work as a professional with professionals. The people I work with in our team are all craftsmen and women, with broad interests and skills. Based in Utrecht (Den Dolder) I have a beautiful self-build workspace with my partner in the woods. It’s a two-floor workspace, downstairs is the wood workshop (70m2) and upstairs (84m2) a dust free area and a nice little office. In order to run a project and to deliver it with a certain quality, there has to be a healthy work environment. Think about; time, organization, money, information and communication. The group of people I work with are international, educated, motivated, bit crazy, hardworking, organized and good listeners. I am always in for new contacts, to broaden and deepen the work field. “Kleurcorrectie was bijna niet nodig”
Kreeg ik als feedback na het editen van; “In de zomer” en “Denk maar aan iets blauws” laatste is te zien op het Nederlandse Filmplatform Cinetree.
Als ontwerper - is mijn specialisatie kleuren, vormen, zowel in grote lijnen als tot in het detail. Hoe sterker het team hoe meer onze kracht is om iets waardevols neer te zetten.
Mijn focus ligt op film. Vanuit mijn expertise als vormgever binnen film, word ik ook gevraagd voor theater en beeldende kunst. Zowel voor korte vragen als grote inhoudelijke opdrachten.
Vanuit mijn ruime studio in de buurt van Utrecht zet ik mij in voor filmmakers die grenzen opzoeken. Samen met een bekwame regisseur en cameraman/vrouw zetten we een gecreëerde wereld neer. Bijna altijd in een casco ruimte, vanuit een script, inspiratie of specifieke vraag/zoektocht. Daarbij komt van pas mijn kennis van ambacht, ik kan gewoon dingen maken naast het bedenken. Ook heb ik om mij heen een team van vakbekwame timmerlieden, decorbouwers, artistiekelingen, naaisters.
Daarnaast zet ik mij ook af en toe in voor commercieel werk; campagnes. Snel schakelen, oplossingen bedenken en het tempo hooghouden.
